Bhutan Coronavirus Latest Update as of 23rd March 2022
Bhutan first confirmed COVID-19 positive case on 5th March, 2020 from a 76 years old US male tourist who travelled to Bhutan via India. Following the first case deducted, Bhutan closed entry for international tourists starting 6th March, 2020 for both by land and flights. Immediately overnight, around 90 people who came directly in contact with him, along with his 59-year-old partner, driver, and guide were promptly traced and quarantined. The 76 years old American male was evacuated to the United States on 13 March by air ambulance to Baltimore, MD and survived.
On 20th March, 59-year old partner of the American tourist who tested positive for COVID-19 who was in 14 days into quarantine, 19 days after entering Bhutan and 28 days after her first contact with the index case. Although their driver and guide tested negative, both were being held in extended quarantine even though their quarantine period had ended. Since then Bhutan had imported cases only (Bhutanese who were working abroad and retuned to Bhutan). Bhutan Coronavirus latest update given below.

When did Bhutan under go III lockdown?
Ministry of Health announced III – 3rd lockdown from 16th January 2022 to still unknow due to community spread of Omicron cases from various areas. The lockdown is implemented to break the chain of community transmission. We hope Bhutan will continue to remain as country as corona free country.
When did Bhutan under go II lockdown?
Ministry of Health announced II – 2nd lockdown from 20th December 2020 to 31st January 2021 due to detection of unexpected positive cases from the community. The lockdown was successful to bring down the cases to zero and declared NO community transmission. We hope Bhutan will continue to remain as country without corona virus or corona free country.
When did Bhutan under go I lockdown?
Bhutan was under complete national wide lockdown starting from 10th August, 2020 until 11th September, 2020.

International Borders of Bhutan Remained Closed
Starting from 22nd March, 2020, all international borders were sealed.
Starting 31st March, 2020, Bhutan’s Prime Minister, Dr. Lotay Tshering, announced that the quarantine period for COVID-19 in Bhutan will be extended from 14 to 21 days, even though the international (WHO) standard for quarantine is 14 days. He said: “There is the risk of testing positive even after quarantining for 14 days. That is why we have decided to extend the quarantine period.”
Starting 25th April, 2022 all arrivals in Bhutan (including Bhutanese citizens) must take 5 days mandatory quarantine which is reduced from the current 14 days quarantine for fully vaccinated travelers. Those who are unvaccinated will have to undergo quarantine for 10 days.
Bhutan will be reopening from 23 September 2022 without mandatory quarantine with new tourism policy.
