DETAILED ITINERARY |
Day 01: Six Senses Thimphu “Palace in the Sky”
Fly on the wings of the Dragon to Bhutan, on arrival in Paro International Airport, complete the immigration formalities and exit through only one arrival gate where HBT dedicated team who will be holding placard, no one will be missed. We welcome with khaddar and proceed to Thimphu which will take about an hour and half. The route will follow Paro River until Chuzom from where we will bend towards Thimphu river taking us to the heart of capital city Thimphu. The entire stretch of drives is very scenic and picturesque as we pass by some of the beautiful villages of Bondey, Shaba, Isuna etc until we enter welcome gate in Thimphu. Arts and Crafts Vocational School- Arts and Craft School is where student learn 13 different techniques to master in Bhutanese Arts. Some of the skills required eight years to graduate. You can see live carving, painting, sculpture etc. You are allowed to take the pictures/make video. Products made by students are on display at the showroom for sales as well. The school is closed in July and December to February, beside their exams and events. Folk Heritage Museum-This museum was established in 2001 and provides visitors with fascinating insights into the Bhutanese material culture and way of life, especially the life of Bhutanese in remote parts of Bhutan. Tashichho Dzong-Houses the throne room of His Majesty the King of Bhutan and government secretariat buildings, beautiful arts and crafts, built in 17th century. Visitors are open for an hour in the evening and closed during official meeting or gathering.Return to the lodge and ease tired muscles with a Dotsho (Bhutanese hot stone bath with herbs) in the spa followed by a jet lag massage before dinner at signature restaurant Namkha which offers views over the lodge’s reflecting ponds to the twinkling lights in the valley below. Day 02: Six Senses Thimphu “Palace in the Sky”
Thimphu- This bustling little city is the main centre of commerce, religion and government in the country. Thimphu is the most modern city with an abundance of restaurants, internet cafes, nightclubs and shopping centers. However it still retains its cultural identity and values amidst the signs of modernization, often referred as world only city without traffic lights. Start the morning with a yoga or meditation class at the lodge’s Prayer Pavilion before heading out across the valley to visit the majestic Buddha Dordenma– The Buddha Dordenma is located at a top of the hill in Kuenselphodrang Nature Park and overlooks the southern entrance to Thimphu valley. The Buddha Dordenma is a gigantic 51.5-meter tall statue, making it one of the largest statues of Buddha in the world. From here an optional two-hour hike takes you to Changangkha Lhakhang-one of the oldest monasteries in Thimphu, with sweeping views across the valley. (The monastery can also be accessed by car for those who choose not to hike). Next, see what the future holds at Pangri Zampa Lhakhang- It is one of the oldest monasteries of Bhutan. A 16th-century monastic school, for a private astrology reading and fortune telling. Royal Textile Museum:The National Textile Museum which opened in June 2001, is worth a leisurely visit to get to know the living national art of weaving. Changing exhibitions introduce the major weaving techniques, styles of local dress and textiles made by women and men. The small shop features work from the renowned weaving centers in Lhuntshe Dzongkhag, in north-eastern Bhutan. Each item is leveled with the name of the weaver and price. The textile museum’s exhibition are centered around six major themes – warp pattern weaves, weft pattern weaves, role of textiles in religion, achievements in textile arts, textiles from indigenous fibres and the royal collection. National Post Office: Bhutan Post Office Headquarters of Thimphu is home to the world’s largest photo book. One of the best and most unique feature of this place is you can get yourself clicked and printed on a Bhutanese stamp. Later hike to Lunsigang which takes almost 20 minutes, a simple but charming picnic spot for a late afternoon butter tea or masala chai with Bhutanese snacks. Day 03: Six Senses Thimphu to Six Senses Punakha “Flying Farmhouse Amidst Rice Fields”
Start the most scenic drive to Punakha from Thimphu over dochula pass which takes about two hours. After the break at Dochula, the road descends into Wangdue and Punakha taking us to one of the warmest places of Bhutan. Dochula Pass- The pass is at a popular location as it offers a stunning 180 degree panoramic view of the Great Himalayan mountain ranges. The view is especially scenic and very clear on winter days with snowcapped mountains forming a majestic backdrop to the tranquility of the 108 chortens gracing the mountain pass. Punakha Dzong- Built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the Dzong was named Druk Pungthang Dechen Phodrang (Palace of Great Happiness). Punakha is still the winter residence of Je-Khenpo religious head of Bhutan. King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck convened the first National Assembly here in 1952. This is one of the finest and must see Dzongs of Bhutan. The Dzong stands in between meeting point of two rivers, Phochu and Mochu making the most photogenic Dzongs of Bhutan. Punakha Suspension Bridge- Punakha suspension bridge is considered one of the longest of its kind in Bhutan. The bridge connects the dzong with the villages Shengana, Samdingkha and Wangkha on the other bank of the Po Chhu river. In these small villages, locals sell their wares in tiny, traditional shops. Visitors can stop here for a quick and authentic view of true Bhutan. The suspension bridge is only about 15 minutes’ walk from Punakha Dzong. Afterwards, it’s a short 20-minute drive through lush scenery as you ascend to the Six Senses lodge. Overnight in Punakha
Day 04: Six Senses Punakha “Flying Farmhouse Amidst the Rice Fields”
Punakha is often referred as second capital having best Dzongs in Bhutan. Punakha has the perfect place to awaken the nature lover, take in the splendid views of the Himalayas, listen to the sounds of the Mo Chhu and Po Chhu rivers that simply soak up the serene beauty of this gorgeous valley. Chorten Ningpo– A monastery which dates back to 17th century that was built by Gyalsay Tenzin Rabgye in the 17 century. The hike to the temple is about 2.5 hours. Visit Kabasa village on the way with its school, monastery and typical Bhutanese farmhouses. Chimi Lhakhang- This temple is known as the temple of fertility. It is widely believed that childless couples can visit this temple to pray for better fertility to conceive the child. There are stories and incidences that many visitors dream came true however one must truly need to believe and follow the lama’s instruction. The hike though the lovely villages of Mesina gives truly amazing experience. Enjoy the gentle walks from the road head. On the way back to the lodge stop off to visit the home of Aum Tshewang and sample her homemade ara (Bhutanese moonshine). We suggest no more than two shots! Lunch today is a delicious Bhutanese Thali set served outdoors on the patio at the lodge. Rafting in Punakha- Since the river flow of Punakha is bigger than other rivers, this is the only place where you can opt for best river rafting in Bhutan. Rafting in October until May will have crystal clear water but high river ride in June to September gives good experiences to the rafters. You can expect grade II-IV river tide and its about 1.5 hrs to 2 hrs ride depending on time and cost. Its on additional cost. Overnight in Punakha. This evening, our chefs will prepare a delicious Indian menu at Ari, the lodge’s signature restaurant, or you can opt for a poolside barbecue.
Day 05: Six Senses Punakha “Flying Farmhouse Amidst the Rice Fields”
Punakha had been Bhutan’s capital from the 17th century up to 1955, when it shifted to Thimphu. Punakha valley, one of Bhutan’s most scenic destinations, is the perfect place to awaken the nature lover in you. Start your day with a bicycle ride along the river valley discovering the natural beauty of Punakha. A special picnic lunch can be enjoyed at Zomlithang. After your meal, enjoy the ride to Talo Nobgang Village– the home of the Queen mothers. The villages, which are scattered along the hill slopes, are known for its cleanliness and hygiene among Punakha villages and visit Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang Nunnery– a meditation center for nuns. Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang Nunnery is the home of Bhutan’s tallest statute of Avalokitesvara (Chenrezig chagtong chentong) with the average height of 14ft. Return to the lodge for evening yoga session or perhaps rejuvenate with a relaxing footbath at the spa. Ask about walking meditation practice, a surefire way to reconnect with yourself and your surroundings. Day 06: Six Senses Punakha to Six Senses Paro “Stone Ruins”
As we proceed to Paro, we will retrace the journey crossing over Dochula, up until Chuzom and further to Paro. The entire stretch of drive will refresh your mind and give you second chance to enjoy the great snowcapped mountain views of the Himalayas from Dochula. Semtokha Dzong– The name Semtokha literally means “Atop a Demon”. The dzong was modeled after the Gyal Gyad Tshel Institute of Ralung (Tibet) and is quite distinctive as its Utse or central tower has 12 sides. The dzong contains the bed chambers of both Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel and Jigme Namgyel, two of the most important figures in Bhutanese history. Rinpung Dzong : ‘Fortress on a Heap of Jewels’, is ranked one of the best Bhutanese architecture. The massive buttressed walls that tower over the town are visible throughout the valley, particularly when landing at Paro Airport. The Dzong also offers administrative seat of the district of Paro.The Dzong was built in 1644 under the order of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Nyamai Zampa: A traditional cantilevered bridge, and town temple built in 1525, to view ancient wall paintings. National Museum of Paro– Perched above Paro Dzong it was watchtower built in 1649 to protect the undefended Paro Dzong located below, renovated in 1968 to house the National Museum. Today this museum houses the best collections of all time historical items making worth for a visit. Beer tasting at Namgay Artisanal Brewery: They brew many styles of beers, considering the different drinking palates for taste, making sure that all beer-lovers are satisfied. Six Senses Paro is situated at an elevation of 9,500 feet (2,900 meters) next to a 15th-century ruined fortress. The stone ruins and breathtaking views of the valley below provide a dramatic backdrop to your stay. There are pleasant walks through pine forests as well as small and little-known monasteries well worth a visit just a few minutes’ walk from the lodge. Enjoy a cocktail on the patio at sunset before dinner at Jangkho, where you’ll be served a delicious menu that incorporates ingredients from our Six Senses organic farm. Over Night in Paro
Day 07: Six Senses Paro “Stone Ruins”
This picturesque region in the kingdom is covered in fertile rice fields and has a beautiful, crystalline river meandering down the valley. Paro has more of historical sites, high-end tourist resort and many souvenir shops for shopping including world famous Takstang. Taktsang Gompa/Tiger’s Nest Temple– is Bhutan’s most iconic landmark and religious Buddhist site in the world. The name Taktsang translates to “The Tiger’s Nest”. The temple is one of the holiest sites in Bhutan which clings impossibly to a sheer cliff face 900 meters above the valley. Although good trekkers can make it to the top in two hours, most of the guests take whole day to complete the hike. Kichu Lhakhang- Temple considered sacred Jewel of Bhutan was established by the Buddhist King Songstsen Gampo of Tibet to overcome the giant ogress that laid across Tibet and Himalayas preventing the spread of Buddhism. The king is believed to have built the temple at the left foot of the enormous ogress. Kichu Lhakhang was among 12 temples in Bhutan out of 108 temples said to have been constructed over single night. Kichu Lhakhang was initially small in size however later, the temple expanded both in grandeur and size to its form that we see today. Outdoor Activities– Nicely made and well maintained activity place attached to whole sell Buddha statue store, offers wearing Bhutanese dress, playing archery and darts for guests visiting Bhutan. Day 08: Six Senses Paro “Stone Ruins”
Paro valley extends from the confluence of the Paro Chhu and the Wang Chhu rivers at Chuzom up to Mt. Jomolhari at the Tibetan border to the North. This picturesque region is one of the widest valleys in the kingdom and is covered in fertile rice fields and has a beautiful, crystalline river meandering down the valley. After a good night’s sleep, relax this morning on the terrace of the lodge’s Living Room and enjoy the Himalayan sunshine over a leisurely breakfast before hike to Jele Dzong,-a small fortress built strategically on a ridge back in the early 16th century to cater to travelers journeying between Paro and Thimphu. Take a moment to hang your own prayer flags. On a clear day, the northerly mountain views are truly stunning. vicinity. Farm House Visit– This experience is a particularly fun and spontaneous way to connect with the local community and learn about Bhutanese culture and way of living. Return to the lodge and take a short stroll over to the 15th-century Samteling Monastery situated just next to your lodge- The single-story temple was built in the traditional Bhutanese style using stone and woodwork and features statues as well as beautiful wall paintings of the Buddhist saints. Later in the evening prepare your body for the onward journey with a sauna, cold plunge and deep tissue massage at the spa. Our chefs will prepare a special Indian menu for you or, for a truly memorable experience; you can dine under a canopy of stars next to the stone ruins of a 15th-century dzong on the grounds of the lodge (optional). Dress in traditional Bhutanese attire (a gho for a man and a kira for a woman) to compliment the atmosphere with candles casting shadows on the stone walls. Live music, folk dances and a traditional Bhutanese menu are highlights of the evening. Overnight in Paro
