Motor Roads in Bhutan:
Traveling within Bhutan was by foot or on mule or horseback until 1961. Not long ago, covering 175 kilometer road from the Indian border to Thimphu used to take six days. Thanks to road constructions which began during first five year plan which was initiated by His Majesty 3rd King of Bhutan between (1961–66). The first 175 kilometer long road from Phuentsholing to Thimphu was completed in 1962. Today Bhutan has total of 12204.05 km of roads as on April, 2017.
Western Bhutan Roads:
Most of the western roads covering Thimphu, Paro, Punakha, Phobjikha, Haa, Chukha and Phuentsholing are quiet wide, black topped and smooth although you will find lots of curves and sharp bends. The roads conditions of roads in the western Bhutan are very good and offer most scenic views while on road.
Southern Bhutan Roads:
South of Bhutan lacks highway which connected directly from eastern Bhutan to western Bhutan, however the east west southern highway is still under process. Constructing one is a top priority of the government, as the region has great potential to contribute to exports. However in most parts of southern Bhutan, the road connectivity within the district is very good.
Central Bhutan Roads:
Roads in Trongsa, Bumthang, Zhemgang, Gelephu are under road widening project however almost 80% of the project is already completed. Down the line is two years time, it will be very smooth offering wonderful riding experience to everyone. We do not advise for road journey in these areas between July to August, which is prone to frequent road blocks due to fresh cut. Eastern Bhutan Roads:
Roads leading to Mongar, Lhuntse, Tashi Yangtse, Trashigang, Samdrup Jongkhar is also under double lane highway widening project therefore frequent disturbances are always expected. Not advisable to travel with small kids and senior citizens between June to mid September. You can check with Heavenly Bhutan before traveling to these places.
