Tsirang Festival – The annual Tsirang Tshechu is the biggest festival in the southern town of Tsirang. The festival attracts people from all over the region. Several different kinds of mask dances are performed. Local and traditional dances and musics add color to the festive mood. The Thongdrol (large tapestry) of Guru Rimpoche is unfurled on the last day of the tshechu.
Pema Gatshel Festival – Pema Gatshel Dzonkhag is well-known district inhabited with Tshanglas, known for its religious involvement, traditions, festivals and folk music. The celebration of Tshechu has started in this region from the early 1980’s with the construction of the Dzong. People from all over the district come to the district Dzong where the festival is held and all public offices remain closed for three days when the festival is in process. Different kinds of mask dances are performed together with many traditional and classical dances.
Zhemgang Festival – Zhemgang Tshechu, one of the biggest annual festival is held in one of the remotest district of Bhutan. Zhemgang. The locals along with the tourists gather at the Zhemgang Dzong to celebrate Guru Rinpoche’s event, the 8th century Buddhist master . Different mask dances are performed for three days with the unfurling of a huge thongdrel (large tapestry) of Guru Rinpoche on the fourth day.
Mongar Festival – Mongar Dzong holds a three day long Tshechu every year in its courtyard. Devotees from nearby district gather at the courtyard of the Dzong to witness the masked dances which are accompanied by cultural dances to entertain the onlookers . People from all over the region as far as Trashigang and Lhuentse come to attend the festival. A lot of unique dances indigenous to the region are also performed during the festival. It concludes with the unfurling of the Guru Tshengye Thongdrol.
Uma Yakcho Festival – Ura Lhakhang is situated in the middle of Ura village in Bumthang, and the temple is about the size of the National library at Kawajangsa Thimphu. It was built in the 1980s. Inside is a huge statue of Guru Rimpochhe and beautiful paintings. Guru Nangsay Zilnoen is the main statue. The event is a 3- days program, the highlight of which is the invoking and escorting of the Yidam Chhana Dorjee from Gaythen to Ura.
Sarpang Festival – The three-day annual tshechu is held at the lhakhang. The tshechu is performed by the villagers of the community and the folk dances are performed by a group of women.
Chukha Festival – The tshechu is performed annually as an offering to Guru Rinpoche. Different mask dances are performed during the festival, as well as traditional folk songs and dances. The highlight of the festival is the unfurling of the thongdrol (large tapestry) of Guru Rinpoche.
Dagana Festival – Dagana Tshechu is conducted every year as an annual event. Unlike elsewhere, the Dagana Tshechu is conducted for five days. The significance of conducting it for five days is associated with five local deities, each day honoring each deity. Each day of the tshechu begins with an atsara invoking all the five deities. According to the local religious belief, these five deities protect the people of Dagana district. The Neten Chudrug Thongdroel is also unfurled to the public for veneration at the end of the festival.
Merak Sakten Festival – The Merak & Sakten Valleys in the eastern district of Tarshigang is a unique valley inhabited by the semi nomadic people known as Brokpas. At a height of 3000 meters and above, the valley is isolated and free from the influences of the outside world. The Merak Tshechu is held annually at the Merak Lakhang. This three day festival/ Tshechu that gives the semi nomadic Brokpas an ideal break from their daily cattle herding routines. In addition the masked dances the Brokpas have their own unique dance forms the Ache Lhamo and the Yak Dance.
The Sakten Tshechu is held for three days each year at the Sakten Lhakhang situated just next to the village is one of the remote festivals of Bhutan. In addition to its religious function the Tshechu provides the Brokpas with an occasion for revelry and merry making. Like all Tshechus in Bhutan, the festival is a time when the entire community can come together to celebrate and engage in worship. The festival is a lively, colorful and jovial event as the Brokpas are all dressed in their traditional finery and enjoying the celebration with rounds of ara (local wine). The rare Yak dance and the Ache Lhamo dance are performed during this festival. These dances are unique to the Brokpa culture and are quite distinctive from the usual mask dances seen in other parts of the country.
Royal Highlander Festival – The Royal Highlander Festival is held at Laya,Gasa district and considered remote festivals of Bhutan. It was first introduced on 16th Of October in 2016 to mark the celebration of the birth of HRH the Gyalsey, 400 years of Shabdrung Rimpoche and the Rabjung (60 years cycle) birth year of Guru Rimpoche. The Royal Highlander festival shares the beauty and the wonders of Gasa Dzongkhag through its nature, history and its age-old tradition and culture. The simplicity of the life of the highlanders, the festival aims to promote the sustainable livelihood of highlanders, showcase highlanders innovation, and exhibit the highlands as a pride of Bhutan. The festival brings together highlanders from other parts of Bhutan to exchange values, knowledge, skills, and best practices related to highlands and yak farming. The festival is a landmark activity of Gasa dzongkhag “Good to Great Gasa”, a vision inspired by His Majesty the King to make our country great.
