Prime Ministers of Bhutan
Prime Ministers of Bhutan – As per the vision of His Majesty Fourth Drukgyalpo King Jigme Singye Wangchuk, Bhutan conducted its first democratic elections in 2008 for five years term. Since then, Bhutan has held its third consecutive peaceful election in 2018. Bhutan will see fourth election in 2023.
First Prime Minister of Bhutan – Dasho Jigme Yozer Thinley is the first democratically elected Prime Minister of Bhutan. He held the office from April 2008 to April 2013. Earlier, he served as his country’s minister of culture, foreign minister and as ambassador to the UN and several European countries.
Having always championed holistic, inclusive and sustainable development, he played a leading role in ensuring that Bhutan’s development plans are not aimed at short term gains. He introduced his country’s concept of Gross National Happiness to the international community when he addressed the UNDP Asia Pacific Millennium Summit in Seoul in 1998.
Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT) achieved an average economic growth rate of 8%, halved unemployment down to 2.1%. and reduced national poverty rate from 23% to 12%. These achievements were made without any ecological costs under stringent environmental conditions.
In 2012, Dasho Jigme Yozer Thinley convened the High Level Meeting on Wellbeing and Happiness: A New Economic Paradigm at the United Nations. He has since led an international working group on the forming of a new development paradigm which submitted its report to the UN General Assembly to inform the ongoing intergovernmental discourse on defining new goals for the post MDG era.
Second Prime Minister of Bhutan – Dasho Tshering Tobgay was elected as Bhutan’s second prime minister in July 2013 to August 2018, succeeding Jigme Yozer Thinley. Dasho Tshering Tobgay is leader of the People’s Democratic Party and was also the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly from March 2008 to April 2013. After PDP’s 2013 victory, Dasho Tshering Tobgay has established himself as a formidable leader of the new generation, replacing the old order of former ministers. In the past five years, he has proven his leadership credentials after having successfully implemented the 11th Five Year Plan as the head of the government. Dasho Tsehring Tobgay focused on improving Bhutan with small promises. Instead of following in his predecessor’s footsteps and promoting the Gross National Happiness, Tobgay pledged to give each village a power tiller, utility vehicles for each district and two national ambulance helicopters.
Third Prime Minister of Bhutan – Dr. Lotay Tshering is a Bhutanese politician and doctor who is the current Prime Minister of Bhutan. On 7 November 2018, he replaced Tshering Tobgay and was sworn in as 3rd democratically elected Prime Minister of Bhutan. Dr Lotay received his medical degree in 2001 from Dhaka University in Bangladesh. In 2007, he pursued a fellowship in General Urology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee under the World Health Organisation Fellowship. Upon his return to Bhutan, he was the only practicing trained urologist in Bhutan. Dr. Lotay is said to even spend his weekends in the hospital to serve people and even allowed people to stay in his house when he was based in Mongar. In addition, the surgeon said he does not receive money for his service from any agency. Dr. Lotay was conferred the Druk Thuksey (Heart Son of Bhutan) by His Majesty in 2018 for “selfless and dedicated service to the Tsawa-Sum (our King, our country and our people).” During this COVID-19 pandemic situation Bhutan is Lucky to have Dr. Lotey Tshering as the Prime Minister of Bhutan and we the Bhutanese express our gratitude for his excellent coordination and making great policies, ensuring timely guidelines and instructions and keeping the country united to fight this pandemic corona virus. The mentioned above are three prime ministers of Bhutan.
