Indigenous Tribes in Bhutan
Indigenous Tribes in Bhutan – The Drukpa are Bhutan’s indigenous population. They can be divided into four main ethnic groups: the Sharchops, Ngalops, Khengs and Lhotsampas.
The Sharchop are believed to be Bhutan’s original inhabitants, living predominantly in Eastern Bhutan. Bhutan’s second tribe are the Ngalop. Importers of Buddhism to the kingdom, they migrated in the late 19th century from the Tibetan plains. Khengs are inhabitants of central Bhutan and may be indigenous people of Bhutan. The Lhotshampa nestled in the southern plains of Bhutan, looking for agricultural land and work.
Layaps in Bhutan – The Layap are an indigenous people inhabiting the high mountains of northwest Bhutan in the village of Laya, in the Gasa District. They call their village the “BEYUL”, or the hidden land. The distinct attire of Layap women wearing conical pointed bamboo hats is so unique, though the men have stopped wearing their original traditional dress. Yaks are herded, which is the main way of sustenance.
Brokpas in Bhutan – The Brokpa, the semi-nomads of the villages of Merak and Sakteng are said to have migrated to Eastern Bhutan a few centuries ago from the Tshona region of Southern Tibet. The Brokpa people are semi-nomadic yak herders who have lived largely in isolation. The remote villages of Merak (Burnt area) and Sakteng (Bamboo ground) in Eastern Bhutan is home to the Brokpas. As a result of their remote position in the country, the Brokpa’s language and customs are very unique to other Bhutanese ethnic groups.
Doyas in Bhutan – A tribal community that has settled mostly in southern Bhutan. They are considered the aboriginal inhabitants of western and central Bhutan, who over the years migrated to and settled in the present areas in Dorokha. They have their own unique dialect and style of dress.
